The Crowning of the MayQueen

MoonDance

We invite Maidens - young women from 13 to 26 -- to participate in our contest to be the Queen of the May.

The new MayQueen is honored as a representative of Our Lady as youthful Goddess. To be eligible, a Maiden should

  • Have undergone puberty but not yet born a child;
  • Read, sing, or perform something  such as poetry or a hymn, for example, as an offering to the Goddess that demonstrates her understanding of the Goddess and desire/ability to represent the Goddess;
  •   Dress beautifully and creatively to represent the Goddess --  body or face paint, wreaths, etc. also welcome (no jeans, t-shirts, etc.)
  • Have the willingness & ability to come back next year, if chosen, to crown the next May Queen so there will be an unbroken succession.

The MayQueen is chosen by random drawing of a Rune that represents the Lady.  All Maidens participating will become members of the MayQueen's Court.

The Crowning of the May Lord

LADS, gather round! And woo the Lady to be her King and Consort!

Each Lad should need to write a piece to Woo the MayQueen and describe why he should be chosen as the MayQueen's Lord

The MayQueen and Her Court Will Choose the Consort

The May Queen's significant other is not eligible for the contest of the May Lord.

Contest for Queen Mab's Fairy Princess ~

We invite girls 5 through 12 to bring their best Fairy Dress, sing a Fairy song or tell a Fairy Story, to become this year's Fairy Princess ~ one of Queen Mab's "starry faes". The Fairy Princess will have the chance to choose a Fairy Prince, and she and her whole court will have the important task of blessing us all with Fairy Dust and Fairy Kisses all day long!

We will also have mask-making and other crafts for children.

FOR EVERYONE - WHAT TO BRING:
  • Your "most beautifullest" Witchy, Fantasy, Fairy, or Ren-Faire garb!

  • Drums, flutes, music makers of all kinds to celebrate!
  • A bit of food to share (call or email us for suggestions -- 252-675-8981, eternalharvestwicca@yahoo.com)
  • A small magickal gift with which to honor the new MayQueen and Her Consort (a bit of incense, a feather, a poem written out, a small rock or crystal -- homemade, home-composed, and "found" gifts are very appropriate).

The MayQueen and Her Consort will serve as representatives of the Lord and Lady in circle.

"And Now, For Our Most Dreadful Sacrifice..."
Watch Him Burn

For the second year in a row, we are building and sacrificing a Wicker Man.

Constructing, setting up, decorating, dedicating, and ritually burning a Wicker Man is an act of  devotion and sacrifice to the Old Gods. By giving of ourselves at the beginning of Summer, we are offering our prayers and opening the Sacred Paths bewteen us and the Gods, sending energy in advance for a successful harvest and for blessings to flow between us.

The Wicker Man -- built of wood, reeds, and straw and dressed in green -- represents the vegetation,the forest and the crops, and all things growing. In England there were parades where " he takes the form of a man encased in a high wickerwork cage which completely covers him, and is in its turn entirely smothered in green branches, leaves, and flowers. Only his eyes are visible, looking through a hole cut in the cage to enable him to see, and his feet below the level of the wickerwork. ...He is the embodyment of Summer itself."

The Wicker Man will be available throughout the day for decorating with paper chains, prayers, flowers, and herbs and similar offerings that you wish burnt with him.

Burning the Wicker Man will form the core of our Main Ritual, that starts at dark, and that will also celebrate the transition of Power to the Goddess for the Light Half of the yaer, and the transformation of the God from the Lord of the Wild Hunt to the Lord of the Greenwood.
